Your Security Camera Could Be a Fire Hazard. Here’s What Real Protection Looks Like.

When the device meant to protect your home becomes the threat, it’s time to rethink your approach.

Coastal Protection, Inc. is an independent security provider and is not affiliated with Wyze. As your local experts serving the Florida Panhandle, from Destin to Panama City Beach, our priority is keeping our community informed about what’s really protecting their homes. If you bought a Wyze Solar Cam Pan between October 2025 and April 2026, stop using it. Right now.

On June 4, 2026, Wyze Labs, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, recalled more than 321,000 of its Solar Cam Pan security cameras after reports of overheating, explosions, fires, and consumer burn injuries. The cause? Incorrect assembly instructions that could lead homeowners to accidentally puncture the camera’s lithium-ion battery during installation, turning an $80 home security device into a fire risk sitting on the side of your house.

The CPSC has logged 13 overheating incidents tied to the recalled cameras, including six fires or explosions and six reports of minor burns. The cameras were sold at Home Depot, Best Buy, Amazon, and Temu, some of the most common places people shop for affordable home security.

Let that sink in for a moment. A product sold to make your home safer was making it less safe.

This Isn’t Just a Wyze Problem

To be fair to Wyze, product recalls happen across industries. But this particular recall cuts to the heart of a broader issue with budget DIY security products: when the priority is low cost and easy setup, something often gives, whether that’s build quality, installation guidance, product testing, or all three.

DIY security cameras are designed to be assembled by everyday homeowners following an instruction sheet. In this case, those instructions were wrong, and the consequences were real. There’s no technician on-site to catch the mistake. No professional to verify the installation is safe. Just a homeowner, a bag of screws, and a product that wasn’t ready for them.

That’s the hidden cost of cheap security: it can cost you far more than you saved.

What Professional Security Actually Looks Like

At Coastal Protection, Inc., we install and monitor security systems powered by Alarm.com, the leading platform for professionally connected home and business security.

Here’s what that means in practice.

Every installation is done by a trained technician. Not you, following a YouTube tutorial. Not a neighbor who’s “pretty good with tech.” A licensed professional who knows the equipment, knows the risks, and ensures your system is set up correctly and safely from day one. No wrong screws. No missed steps. No fires.

Your system is monitored 24/7 by real people. Alarm.com’s professional monitoring connects your home to a central monitoring station that’s watching around the clock. If an alarm triggers, whether you’re asleep, at work, or traveling,  trained operators assess the situation and dispatch police, fire, or emergency services immediately. You don’t have to see the notification. You don’t have to call anyone. It’s handled.

The technology is built for reliability, not just convenience. Alarm.com uses dual-path cellular and internet connections, meaning your system stays connected even if someone cuts your internet or tries to disable your panel. Features like Crash and Smash protection keep your system sending alerts even if an intruder tries to destroy it. AI-powered Smart Arming learns your household’s patterns to reduce false alarms. And the platform’s video analytics distinguish between a person, a vehicle, and a passing animal, so you get alerts that actually mean something.

Everything works together in one platform. Alarm.com integrates security cameras, door sensors, smart locks, thermostats, lights, and more,  all controlled from a single app. This isn’t a bag of separate gadgets cobbled together. It’s a unified system designed by professionals, for the long term.

The Right Question to Ask Yourself

When you shop for home security, the tempting question is: “What’s the cheapest option that covers the basics?”

The better question is: “What would it actually cost me if something went wrong?”

A fire caused by a recalled camera. A break-in caught too late because no one was monitoring. A family member injured by equipment that wasn’t installed correctly. These aren’t hypotheticals, they’re exactly what happens when security becomes an afterthought.

Your home is where your family sleeps at night. It deserves more than an $80 camera from a shelf at a big-box store.
